There’s a New Flu Shot in New Orleans

Questions answered in this article:

– How bad will flu season 2015 be?

– What is the difference between Quadrivalent and Trivalent flu shots?

– Why is the Quadrivalent flu shot better?

– Is the flu vaccine safe?

– Should everyone get the flu vaccine?

– How much is the flu shot at Urgent Care MD New Orleans?

Flu season is quickly approaching, and you know what that means: time for everyone in the family to get a flu shot. Getting vaccinated now is your first line of defense against the flu, and no clinic is better prepared to help with that than we are at Urgent Care MD New Orleans.

Dr. Patrick Dennis, proud member of Urgent Care MD's medical staff.

Urgent Care MD’s Dr. Patrick Dennis expects this year’s flu to be just as rough as last year.

As Dr. Patrick Dennis explains, “Based on last year’s severity of flu cases and an early onset of positive flu tests in clinics, we predict this year will be equally severe. Early vaccination is the best defense against a bad flu season. Protect your family, and get them vaccinated.” This year, we’re going one step further and using the new Quadrivalent flu vaccine in order to offer you and your family the strongest protection available on the market.

The Quadrivalent vaccine was approved for use in 2012 and, as the name suggests, it protects against four unique flu viruses, as opposed to the traditional Trivalent vaccine, which protects against only three. The CDC website states that the traditional vaccine protects against two influenza “A” viruses and one influenza “B” virus, even though there are two strains of “B” viruses that can cause illness. This means if you stick with the usual shot, you’left vulnerable and unprotected. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine drives this point home by showing that the Quadrivalent vaccine was 70% effective in preventing more serious cases of the flu and resulted in 77% fewer child absences from school – in practical terms, that means less sick days and time away from your daily life.

Quadrivalent flu shots are in at Urgent Care MD New Orleans in Lakeview.

The Quadrivalent vaccine may be new, but it’s still safe: it’s made the exact same way as older flu vaccines, with the only difference being that there’s additional protection. Expected side effects are the same as with other flu vaccines, and it takes two weeks for protection to start. The Quadrivalent formulation can be given to people over 6 months of age. There are a small number of people who should not receive the flu shot, but the doctors at Urgent Care MD will screen you to make sure you’re safe to receive it. Dr. Dennis reminds everyone that we all need an annual flu shot to maintain protection because “each year, the virus strains can mutate and become resistant; therefore, the antibodies you produced last year may not protect you against this year’s strains. Each year’s vaccines are adjusted to provide more adequate coverage against the year’s predicted strains.”

How much will it cost? Most insurances cover the cost of a flu shot. But, Urgent Care MD New Orleans is proud to announce that our self-pay price for the 2015 Quadrivalent flu vaccine is only $30! We’re very proud to say that Urgent Care MD in Lakeview has one of the lowest prices in town.

The important thing is that you’re thinking of getting your flu vaccine, but don’t stop at that. Don’t you want to make sure your family is as protected as possible from the flu? Only a limited number of all flu shots made will be Quadrivalent this season, and we’ve got it in stock at Urgent Care MD. Come see us today for a quick and easy visit so you can be fully prepared for fall!

Vitamin B12 Injections: 3 Great Reasons to Start

There’s been a lot of talk about B-12 injections lately – in New Orleans, across the country, and around the world. While the concept is not new, more and more people everyday are warming up to the idea – and with good reason: the potential benefits of B-12 are almost incalculable.

While most supplements arrive on the scene, quickly become the next big thing, and then just as quickly disappear, a growing, decades-long body of research suggests that B-12 injections might just be the most important thing you can do for your continued health.

For the skeptical, here’s a list of 3 great reasons to begin B-12 injections today.

Vitamin B12, ample supply & ready to go at Urgent Care MD.

Increased Energy

If you’re feeling a general sense of fatigue, B-12 deficiency might be the culprit. Without getting too science-y, B-12 helps your body convert carbohydrates into glucose, which your body uses for energy. Upping your intake of B-12 could be just the thing to boost your tired mind and body, keeping you out of urgent care and off living your life.

Wellness expert and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Joseph Mercola agrees:

“Your body relies on the efficient conversion of carbohydrates to glucose — your body’s source of fuel — to run smoothly, and vitamin B12 plays a major role in that conversion.”

Better Health

Evidence suggests that regular B-12 injections aid in lowering bad cholesterol, a primary cause of eventual heart disease. Moreover, patients with anemia, diabetic neuropathy, and even sickle-cell disease saw improvements using the supplement. Studies have also shown that, in healthy patients, B-12 injections can help to stave off age-related conditions like joint pain, inflammation, and bone loss.

A Clearer Mind

While not all conclusively proven, studies have shown that B-12 can significantly improve conditions like depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, dementia, and certain sleep disorders. Even more significantly, many Alzheimer’s patients were found to have lower than normal levels of B-12, leading some researchers to conclude that regular B-12 injections can be beneficial even for healthy, young brains.

By some estimates, nearly 40% of American adults have a B-12 deficiency. As the population of New Orleans continues to age, that percentage will only increase. Urgent Care MD can help – a B-12 injection can go a long way toward keeping you healthy, happy, and full of energy.

A Quick Guide for Staying Healthy & Safe during Jazz Fest 2015

Jazz Fest season has finally arrived in New Orleans!

While people make plans for parking and buying tickets, many forget to make plans for staying healthy and safe during Jazz Fest.

Here’s a quick little guide for making sure injury and illness don’t ruin your festival season in New Orleans.

Jazz Fest Trumpeter1. Stay Hydrated.

The average temperature in New Orleans, from April into May, is somewhere between 82 & 87 degrees. Factor that into being exposed to sun and elements while at the Fair Grounds Race Course (site of Jazz Fest), and you’re bound to feel the Louisiana heat.

How do you beat the heat? Do your best to find plenty of shade and of course, drink LOTS of water & hydrating fluids. Here is a list of dehydration prevention tips from WebMD

You might say to yourself, “wait, those tips mainly for when you are exercising!?”

Dancing & partying for hours on end definitely counts as exercise in our book, so drink up!

2. Drinking at Jazz Fest? Definitely stay hydrated!

New Orleans is known for having mucho access to a long list of adult beverages. When it comes a giant party like Jazz Fest, you KNOW the booze will be flowing. Simply put, alcohol consumption increases your risk of dehydration. So, just like in tip #1, make sure you’re drinking plenty of non-alcoholic beverages in addition to that party juice. Better yet, just limit your alcohol intake to ensure you have a hydrated (and injury/headache free) Jazz Fest 2015.

3. Watch Your Step

As we’ve pointed out before, New Orleans is an old city, with lots of problems. One of those problems, the cracked streets and sidewalks. Not to pile onto the first 2 tips, but if you’re feeling a little woozy from not enough water + too much booze, you may not see that giant pothole. Luckily, the Fair Grounds are nice and flat (for the most part). But, in New Orleans, you never know what is around the corner… or curb.

4. Allergies

Yes, allergies. After a super rainy New Orleans’ spring, everything is looking nice and green around town. Unfortunately, this also means that allergens are filling the air. For real, the NOLA pollen forecast is a little nuts right now! Coming in from out of town? This means you may not be used to our climate (and allergens). Make sure to pack your allergy meds before leaving to enjoy Jazz Fest 2015.

5. Safety, Crime, and other Stuff

If you’re coming to Jazz Fest 2015, you’re literally going to be swimming in a sea of thousands of people. There are a lot of things that can go wrong during a large music festival. Bonnaroo, one of the biggest festivals in the United States, but together this really cool, super informative, list of “Tips from the Bonnaroo Dept. of Health”.

While Jazz Fest will have a stellar emergency team on site, if you need a little help with fluid replacement, allergy medicine, or patching up scrapes & cuts, Urgent Care MD in Lakeview and Mid-City New Orleans is here to help. Have a fun, and safe, Jazz Fest 2015!
